To understand the situation, one must delve into the Uyghur separatist movement and the hundreds of horrific terrorist attacks that were committed in its name from 1900-2016. Any forced re-education for adherence to a political ideology is a human rights violation on its face, but claims of Uyghur genocide are blown totally out of proportion.
