Baraka, stuck as he is in an identity politics frame, cannot see the reality of US foreign policy. Even as his former running mate is called before the Senate Intelligence Committee to explain her “Russian ties,” Baraka insists that “the longest conflict that the U.S. is involved in is the war between the U.S. and North Korea.” Has he completely thrown out history in favor of identity politics? Has he forgotten that the US, along with most other Western nations, invaded the Soviet Union in 1918, and has not let up on its aggression — cold or hot — since then? And just how does his “white supremacy” theory pertain to the US coup in the Ukraine and its current arming of ultra-nationalists to engage Russia in war? Trump’s NSS speech should have made it clear that the targets of this administration are Russia and China, and the motivation is capitalist profits. Baraka never once mentions Russia, China or Russiagate. And yet, they are the focus of both the current Cold War and any future proxy wars. Will Baraka and his “black anti-war movement” be able to get behind opposition to those wars?
