Naomi Klein: As I wrote at the time, the Copenhagen deal — cooked up behind closed doors with the most vulnerable countries locked out — amounted to a “grubby pact between the world’s biggest emitters: I’ll pretend that you are doing something about climate change if you pretend that I am too. Deal? Deal.”

Nine years after Barack Obama decisively destroyed any hope for a meaningful global climate deal, and in the face of a Republican president determined to play climate supervillain, the bold leadership of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other newly elected members of Congress gives us a real reason to hope. Their plan for a Green New Deal, Naomi Klein writes, will no doubt be squashed in the short term, but the concrete, achievable agenda they outline sets up the possibility that Democrats could run and win in 2020 on an ambitious and comprehensive climate agenda modeled on the most successful economic stimulus package of all time.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump continues to do everything possible to accelerate climate change and intensify the damage it causes. As Sharon Lerner reports, the EPA is poised to roll back protections on streams and rivers that impact 58 percent of America’s drinking water.

Next week The Intercept is partnering with Sen. Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and others for a live town hall about solving the climate crisis. Watch live on our Facebook page Monday at 7 p.m. ET.

Rise Up Editor: Town Hall is Monday, December 3, 2018. Note that if you miss the live town hall, a video of the event will be available.
