The people yes. The people will live on. …
In the darkness with a great bundle of grief
the people march.
In the night, and overhead a shovel of stars for keeps, the people march:
“Where to? what next?”
                                         —Carl Sandburg

In the midst of the COVID19 Pandemic that has altered our lives considerably, Rise Up Times continues to publish fearless writers from independent press sources who tell story after story not found in the mainstream corporate media, who actually analyze ideas, concepts, and politics in spite of pressure and attempts to censor them, and who strive to connect us to gateways for action to act locally while thinking globally in this small world modern technology has created.

Rise Up Times focuses on issues around the media, civil liberties, and anti-military/pro-peace activities. At the same time, Rise Up Times is somewhat eclectic, covering issues in national politics, eco-concerns, and Minnesota issues, most recently around Justice for George and related police issues locally and nationally, as well as the effects of COVID19 on how we live and how the “bailout” is being distributed unfairly, with corporations getting the lion’s share.

Articles from friends who send emails with significant commentary to post, Coleen Rowley’s posts and comments on the Rise Up Times Facebook page, as well as publication of local writers, makes Rise Up Times a community of contributor voices.

We hope you’ll allow us to sustain this virtual community by making a gift to Rise Up Times.

We never anticipated that the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis would cause worldwide protests. Nor the sacking of parts of the city. That Trump would call for the senseless arrest of nonviolent protesters in some form and place, which happened on the streets of Portland, is a more predictable action. Because of a huge uproar from officials and citizens, he has not been able to carry out his threat of sending troops to cities nationwide.

Here are some words I wrote shortly before the election in 2016:

We the people continue to rise up and resist in many ways — To paraphrase Winston Churchill, we shall fight on the streets, we shall fight in the courts, we shall fight in the schools and universities, we shall fight in the cities and in the towns, we shall fight in the hills, the desert, the fields, the mountains…we shall fight throughout the land, we shall never surrender…

We have not surrendered. We continue to resist.

We stand at a crossroads: We can choose a government by the people and for the people or we can choose a non-democratic form of government controlled by a few for their advantage. Trump represents a system driving us toward an authoritarian regime built on hate, on violence of many kinds against people at home and with endless wars abroad and a war against the environment and planet.

I also wrote those words before the 2016 presidential election. But we had no real choice. In his new book How Trump Stole 2020 Greg Palast explains:

America, you can stop hiding your face in shame: you are not guilty. Trump didn’t win in 2016. And I’m not talking about Trump losing the popular vote.Trump lost the Electoral College. That is, he lost if you count all the votes burgled, jacked, swiped, shoplifted, purloined, filched, fiddled and snatched from citizens not of a whitish orange hue. Unless we wise up, 2020 will be déjà vu all over again.

    Rise Up

    Rise against our enemies
    Hatred, lies, and greed
    Rise against divisiveness
    Inclusiveness is what we need
    Bridges to the future build
    Creating a new way
    Rise to fulfill our destinies
    And bring on brighter days!

    Rise up!
    Demand some damn equity!
    Rise up!
We must all hit the streets!
    Rise up!
    Retake the reins of power!
    Rise up!
    Before the Doomsday hour!

    Rise against destructiveness
From want we want, to need
    Rise against this brutal way
    Keeping us enslaved
    No, we’re not free!
Rise up before it’s too late
    Or we’ll extinct ourselves
Because the insane run the halls!
It’s up to Us to make this call!

    Rise up!
All stand tall or We shall fall
    Rise up!
    Yes!
    We do have the power!
    Rise up!
    Only We the People
    Can answer this call!
    Rise up!
    We are responsible for all!

Rise against evil intent of Users
Which no god or demon sent to abuse Us
From the minds of some wishing to Us all!
    Those in power?
There are separate rules for them!
    Foolishly believe cash and power
Are what it takes to win!
    Making them not our leaders
They are just fools for war
    Doubling down on cruelty!
    For once and all
Let’s rewrite their rules to favor We!

    Rise against love’s enemies
    Hatred, lies, and greed
    Rise against divisiveness
    Inclusiveness is what we need
A bridge to the future build
    Creating a new way
    Rise to fulfill our destiny
    And bring on brighter days!

    Rise up!
All stand tall or We shall fall
    Rise up!
    Yes!
    We do have the power!
    Rise up!
    We the People

    Rise up!

    Rise up!

    Rise up!
    Retake the reins of power
    Rise up!

    Rise up!

    Rise up!

    Rise up!

    Rise up!

    (fades, repeating)
