Good news to celebrate this year! As 2021 draws to a close, we rejoice that this is the year that the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) became international law. The landmark agreement, adopted by the United Nations, entered into force on January 22, 2021, at the beginning of the year. This treaty bans nuclear weapons, with the ultimate intention of eliminating them entirely.
“Without a doubt, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is the most promising development concerning nuclear disarmament since the nuclear age began more than 75 years ago,” said Timmon Wallis of BanNuclearUS. He goes on to say, “Nothing even comes close to the final and absolute rejection of these weapons by a majority of the world’s countries.”
One hundred thirty-two countries initially adopted the treaty. As of this date, the 56 countries listed below have ratified the treaty; 30 other countries have signed and await ratification.
