On March 30, 2019 protesters gathered in DC to rally and march in a No to NATO, Hands Off Venezuela protest at the White House at the beginning of a week of activities around NATO's 70th anniversary being celebrated in Washington this year. April 4th is also the anniversary of Martin Luther King's Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence speech and of his assassination one years later.
The conference stressed that in going forward, there is the need for unity in what is global strife and an international struggle; the need for networking, both at the conference and beyond; and education about U.S. military bases and militarism. Hundreds of thousands have died in U.S./NATO wars in Iraq, Libya, Somalia and Yugoslavia. Millions of refugees are now risking their lives trying to escape the carnage that these wars have brought to their homelands, while workers in the 29 NATO member-countries are told they must abandon hard-won social programs in order to meet U.S. demands for even more military spending.”
Actions are being planned in Washington, D.C., around the 70th anniversary of NATO on April 4th. with supporting events encouraged locally and regionally throughout the US and worldwide.
