The logo of LulzSecAnonymous and LulzSec released a joint statement responding to the FBI on Thursday morning, defending their practices and insisting that their hacks will effect social change.

The groups said that they are executing their attacks because governments are lying to their people and conspiring with corporations and lobbyists.

“These governments and corporations are our enemy,” the statement said. “And we will continue to fight them, with all methods we have at our disposal, and that certainly includes breaking into their websites and exposing their lies.”

On its Twitter feed, the formerly retired hacker group LulzSec said that it was already working with media outlets to release e-mails the group had obtained from News of the World. The group came out of retirement earlier this week to attack the Sun and other News Corp. publications in response to the phone-hacking and bribery allegations leveled against the company.

We’re currently working with certain media outlets who have been granted exclusive access to some of the News of the World emails we have.

Announcing the arrest of 14 Anonymous members and two men linked to LulzSec data releases, the deputy head of the FBI’s cyber division, Steven Chabinsky, told NPR, “The Internet has become so important to so many people that we have to ensure that the World Wide Web does not become the Wild Wild West.”

The hacker groups scoffed at this notion. “]When] was the Internet not the Wild Wild West?” they said. “Do you really believe you were in control of it at any point? You were not.”

The groups said they had no choice but to launch their anti-government and anti-corporation attacks.

“We become bandits on the Internet because you have forced our hand.”

I am writing a thesis with the hope that it will be applied to better the world we live in. This thesis is on Public Trust in the Media, WikiLeaks, and the Government and need to know what your opinions are. The online survey is anonymous, multiple choice and will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Please follow the link: http://www.kwiksurveys.com/?s=ILLLML_9669e09d. Would be great if you would encourage others to do the survey also.
