About Iraqi Voices

Iraqi Voices is an ongoing collaborative mentorship program that gives Iraqis in Minnesota support and training to produce high-quality documentary video shorts. The films are written and directed by Iraqi-American participants and are photographed and edited by Nathan Fisher. Operated by the Iraqi and American Reconciliation Project, this activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Based in Minneapolis, the Iraqi and American Reconciliation Project (IARP) facilitates artistic and cultural dialogue between Iraqis and Americans. IARP presents authentic Iraqi and American voices to counter negative stereotypes, build mutual understanding and respect, and provide a platform for dialogue.

Alice’s story gave me a lot to think about. I felt that I understood some of what she is dealing with the PTSD. ADHD as well as being uprooted from all that she knew. I’m an American national however life wasn’t great for me. I could relate even though we come from different backgrounds. To those that judged her negatively? Well in my opinion these same people never really suffered, heartbreak, trauma, chaos (especially war) and being forced to uproot then leave behind everything you know to start over then try to readjust someplace else. War is ugly, it leaves deep scars, ruins the psych. And some just don’t recover. Alice I’m glad you did make it. Keep in school your an inspiration to me and American who has lived here all my life.
