Pete Seeger “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy”
Editor’s Note: I always took this song literally as an antiwar song. A good antiwar song. But now I also see the title metaphorically as well. This country is “waist deep in the big muddy” and still being pushed on by those in control, the captains − whether of industry or the government − those in command, not just toward war, but toward the end of democracy, toward totalitarianism, toward tolerance replaced with intolerance, human rights replaced with corporate rights, compassion replaced with cold and crazy uncompassion. We are “waist deep in the big muddy,” led by the captains of industry and the government. And we will sink with them unless we turn back.

Aired on CBS at the height of the Vietnam War, this song holds just as much truth today…

Love the song and yes, we are certainly waist deep in muddy waters.
