 About ALEC

ALEC is corporate bill mill. It is not just a lobby or a front group; it is much more powerful than that. Through ALEC, corporations hand state legislators their wishlists to benefit their bottom line. Corporations fund almost all of ALEC’s operations. They pay for a seat on ALEC task forces where corporate lobbyists and special interest reps vote with elected officials to approve “model” bills. ALEC legislative leaders are tasked with a duty to get the bills introduced and passed; ALEC members introduce the bills in statehouses as their own brilliant ideas—without disclosing that corporations pre-voted on them with politicians behind closed doors at ALEC resort meetings. ALEC boasts that it has over 1,000 of these bills introduced by legislative members every year, and more than 20% become legally binding. ALEC describes itself as a “unique,” “unparalleled” and “unmatched” organization. It might be right. It is as if a state legislature had been reconstituted, yet corporations had pushed the people out the door. Editor’s Note. Four in Minnesota: Best Buy, Medtronic, Scranton, and UnitedHealth Group.  Who are our cell phone carriers?  AT&T and Verizon, besides spending millions lobbying Congress, are both members of ALEC.  And so is Century Link.

The following corporations are members of ALEC’s task forces. This list is current as of July 2011, except for the Tax and Fiscal Policy task force, correct as of March 2011.
