Video> Occupy Columbus Circle! Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie in 99% Solidarity “This Little Light” 10/22/11

Pete Seeger Takes OWSers on a Singing March> Watch Video

Last night after a concert on the Upper West Side, folk singer and progressive hero Pete Seeger, age 92, his grandson Tao-Rodriguez Seeger, Arlo Guthrie and others led a singing march in support of Occupy Wall Street that culminated in an “occupation” of Columbus Circle with a sing-along of Seeger’s classic protest songs.

There’s a great deal of amateur video circulating on the internet of course, and much of it is good enough to be inspirational and moving. Seeger has been absolutely instrumental in maintaining, creating, and inspiring the American protest song playbook–and the more than 1,000 marchers raised their voices in song as homage.

Here are the protesters singing “This Little Light of Mine” as they march, from none other than Michael Moore’s YouTube channel:

Protesters also sung Seeger’s classic song “Which Side Are You On” and more throughout the late-night march and occupation” of Columbus Circle. Arlo Guthrie’s father Woody’s “This Land is Your Land” was a particular favorite, with reason.

Pete Seeger, Tao Rodríguez-Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Guy Davis, Tom Paxton, Tom Chapin, and David Amram joined Occupy Wall Street on a march from Broadway and 95th Street in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, down to Columbus Circle at Broadway and 59th Street. When we got there, this is what happened.

We Shall Overcome  [Not the best video, but the most moving.]

And here’s another “This Little Light” at the circle.

At this point, there are so many actions, teach-ins, marches, acts of disobedience and sing-alongs in New York City every day that it’s beginning to feel like the Occupation has taken over Manhattan.

And that’s a good thing.
