Join AlliantACTION
as We Celebrate the 142nd Birthday of Mahatma Gandhi and the Power of Nonviolence

Gather Sunday at 1 PM, October 2, 2011> Action at 1:30

Note below that ATK (a major weapons manufacturer) is moving to Arlington, VA.  If you know of a group in the D.C. area that might be interested in continuing a vigil or actions, please contact WAMMToday at wammmedia@gmail.com.

Many called Gandhi a saint, his teachings are studied around the world and his name is synonymous with nonviolence. What better way to celebrate the life of one dedicated to the power of nonviolence but to be a witness outside the headquarters of the largest Minnesota-based military contractor. ATK profits from violent solutions to complex problems.

Join us outside ATK as we honor a man and his ideas of nonviolent resolution, while challenging the priorities of OUR governments spending. The military industrial complex reaps record profits from endless and senseless wars.

We use the nonviolent power of respectful dialogue to continue educating and witnessing to others around us, whether they are ATK executives, workers, pedestrians, police officers or ourselves.

ATK moving HQ from Minnesota to Washington, D.C., area

Alliant Techsystems Inc.  said Thursday it is moving its headquarters from Eden Prairie to the Washington, D.C., area to be closer to its customers.

A spokesman for ATK (NYSE: ATK) said the company also wants to move so it can push its international diversification strategy.

The move to Arlington, Va., will take place by Oct. 1, according to the spokesman. The company already has about 50 employees in one floor of an office building there. It is taking another floor in the same building to accommodate employees moving from Eden Prairie. ATK also has about 3,500 employees in facilities in Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

ATK, which has about 2,700 employees in the Twin Cities, said it will keep roughly that workforce level after the move, the spokesman said.

“The relocation … will provide our company with opportunities for increased engagement with our customers and Congress, as well as with our aerospace and defense industry peers that already are located in the region,” ATK CEO Mark DeYoung said in a statement. “Expanding our presence and visibility in the Washington area will support our strategy of creating a more global, diversified company.”

The company is relocating DeYoung, plus its chief financial officer and all of its senior vice presidents to the same office building near Washington where it has had an office for years, the spokesman said.

ATK will likely consolidate its Eden Prairie office, where about 210 employees work, into some of its other facilities. ATK has hired UGL Equis, a commercial real estate brokerage firm, to find a tenant that would sublease its Eden Prairie office. ATK also has about 2,000 employees in Anoka and about 500 employees in Plymouth.

In July, ATK announced an expansion of its security and sporting group headquarters in Anoka, where it agreed to lease a 230,000-square-foot building to go along with its existing 600,000-square-foot plant there.

With $4.8 billion in 2010 revenues, ATK was ranked as the 17th largest public company in Minnesota last year, according to Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal research. ATK was the smallest Minnesota company to make the Fortune 500 list last year. It was ranked 472nd.
